LOUD LOUD LOUD
Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club, sponsored by Bowlo Sports & Leisure Yamba, fundraising efforts continue to support LOUD SHIRT DAY. So why do CCDBC support Loud Shirt Day…..here are some facts about hearing in Australia: Australians are affected by hearing loss, and this is expected to increase to 1 in 4 by 2050. Over 300 babies are born with hearing loss in Australia each year. Hearing loss is the most common disability in newborns. Our fundraising enables students to be screened through Hear & Say, Hear to Learn-School Hearing Screening program. This program picks up hearing or ear health issues and avoids children slipping through the cracks. Also, families were supported via telepractice or a combination of telepractice and face to face services during the peak coronavirus pandemic in 2020. All funds raised are helping babies and toddlers currently learning to hear and speak, in a few years they will be ready to go to school just like their peers thanks to our help. So a huge shout out to our members who searched their wardrobes or visited our Op shops to wear something LOUD and donated generously to Hear & Say. CCDBC are always looking for new members. What a great way to exercise and enjoy the fabulous Clarence River. If you are interested send us an email – clarencecoastdbclub@gmail.com . We paddle for one hour Wednesday 4pm and Saturday 8am.

8am Saturday 16th October 2021 saw CCDBC back on the water after 9 weeks in hibernation. 14 crew were eager to get back in the boat and what a glorious day it was. New procedures saw everyone check in with the QR code and all had their double vaccination paperwork ready to be sighted. The weather, wind and water conditions were near perfect and once on the water the muscles were quick to remember the technique. The banter between paddlers returned and everyone enjoyed the laughs and the workout. Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club AGM 2021
At the recent AGM both the Presidents & Coaches Reports were tabled. Both reports reinforced that COVID has affected us all. Some more than others but the impact on CCDBC has been significant and ongoing. Whether it be; regattas, training, fundraising, social events, grants or courses, COVID has been front and centre in displaying its annoying side. A strong feeling of not being right or completely safe does tend to permeate our thinking and that’s very understandable. We have been fortunate indeed to have a strong, proactive and competent Board to support the club through these strange times. We thank the Bowlo Sports & Leisure Yamba for their sponsorship of sun safe shirts for the club. It is to be commended that their support keeps us safe. The coaches have focussed on developing correct paddling technique, building strength and endurance, and challenging individual paddlers to maintain fitness and measure personal improvement by increasing effort at each session. We have hosted visiting paddlers, always conscious of COVID safety guidelines. Everyone has been keen to recruit and welcome new paddlers. It is great to celebrate Chez as a Level 2 sweep and Kathy as Level 3 sweep; CCDBC now has 5 sweeps which allows us to share the sweeping role. Congratulations to Lesley as Club Person of the Year. Lesley did keep us busy with the Push-Up Challenge supported again beautifully by Bruce with his never-ending playlists and Graham with the photo / caption challenge. We then moved into Euros 2020. Lesley then created the Virtual Trip to Darwin and of course, there were more challenges there. A fantastic job to keep the club laughing and connected. AND YES we are in lockdown again so to keep our level of fitness and strength up Lesley has found yes wait for it ........ Fitness Madness REVISITED - 9 days of exercise with the PowerPoint in case you have forgotten how to safely do each exercise. Congratulations to the following people who were elected to the CCDBC Board for 2021-22 season. President – Wayne Sutton, Secretary – Lesley Sutton, Treasurer – Lynda Leslie, Cheryl Coleman, Graham Dunford, Ree Dunn, Kim Sanders. For the month of June CCDBC participated in the Push-Up Challenge. This is the 3rd year the club has been involved. So, what is it? It challenges individuals, teams and communities to complete 3,318 push-ups over 25 days. The number of push-ups is the amount of people Australia lost to suicide in 2019.
Each day, we learnt about mental health as the push-up target related to a vital mental health statistic in Australia. For example, 135 push-ups because one recent analysis of scientific evidence suggests that three 45-minute exercise sessions per week (135 minutes total) is enough to provide anti-depressant benefits to mental health. The first week we had the challenge to post a caption to a daily photo (courtesy of Graham) and the second week we had to identify a mystery local photo. Of course, we also had our daily playlist, courtesy of Bruce. Also, congratulations to Ree Dunn, Chris Evans, Kim Sanders and Lyn Stainlay who joined Grafton Rowing Club recently in its annual Rowathon in aid of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. Commencing on the beautiful Clarence River from Grafton Rowing Club, the dragon boat crew paddled 20 kilometres around both Susan & Elizabeth Islands. New members are always welcome. Contact us at clarencecoastdbclub@gmail.com The Yamba Triathlon returned to the coast for an epic December tri getaway on Sunday, 6 December. Combined with the local town’s nostalgic atmosphere, it’s easy to see why the Yamba Tri is a favourite on the multi-sport calendar! 21 Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club members once again joined the volunteer force taking on registration, traffic control, course marshal, pedestrian marshal, swim exit to transition, bike exit to transition and water stations attendants. Thank you to Bowlo Sports & Leisure Yamba for sponsoring the purchase of long-sleeved sun safe shirts for our members. The shirts not only looked great, but they also certainly provided maximum protection whilst we manned our stations. The day prior we paddled on some south western reaches of the Clarence, up Oyster Channel, past Micalo Island and up to Carrs Drive boat ramp, in magnificent conditions. As everyone was enjoying themselves the session extended to an hour and a half and all benefitted from the taxing of our aerobic capacity during this scenic paddle. Congratulations to the newly elected Board of Directors:- Cheryl Coleman, Graham Dunford, Ree Dunn, Lynda Leslie (treasurer), Gail Scobie, Lesley Sutton (secretary), Wayne Sutton. Also at the AGM were our Major Award presentations. Congratulations to Judi Greig who was awarded Life Member. Judi has been a member of CCDBC for ten years. She is often the first person at paddling with the green box opened and paperwork ready to go for both old and new paddlers. Judi is our window to the community as the first-person new paddlers often communicate with. She is part of the leadership team, is highly respected and any comments she makes are thoughtful and considered, always willing to help with any task if required. With all social events organised she has committed to any theme and always been involved. Without a doubt, at any Regattas attended, Judi performs to the best of her ability and is gracious in defeat. Judi is an excellent role model and ambassador for the sport of dragon boating. She is a deserving recipient of this prestigious award. Club Person of the Year was presented to Ree Dunn and Rhonda Winters. Ree, our club President, through her solid direction, has kept our little club afloat. Two years ago, she took on the role of President. She is also a Level 3 sweep, a coach and one of a very small group who tow the boat. She quietly gets in there and helps out and that embodies our club ethos – inclusive and supportive. Rhonda has worked tirelessly throughout the season searching the Yamba surrounds for discarded bottles and cans to boost the club social fund. Each month, despite a fall in our revenue from club fees and fundraising due to COVID restrictions the social account continued to climb. As a senior coach, she has supervised Steve and Ree to attain their coaches’ certificate. The time, effort and expertise she puts into this role is appreciated and valued. With three recently joined members and a further six paddlers enjoying five free sessions, we are now looking forward to our 2020/2021 season. CCDBC Flaunt their Flannies…. A Great Cause Flannie Day is an awareness and action day on the issues of homelessness and hunger in Australia. Tragically, the number of Australians experiencing food insecurity and homelessness is increasing. The most recent Foodbank Hunger Report reveals 4 million Aussies experienced food insecurity in the last twelve months. For the 3rd year Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club members searched their wardrobes to find and wear a flannelette shirt to the paddling session to show we care and acknowledge that every Australian deserves the dignity of having a safe home to go to and enough food to eat. Paddlers also donated non-perishable food to assist those at risk and experiencing homelessness. The donated non-perishable food was then taken to Wellspring Christian Church, Yamba. Wellspring Community Care support those in need with access to groceries at reduced prices as well as providing access to emergency food parcels for those in need. As winter comes to an end and spring approaches, our beautiful Clarence River is the perfect setting for challenging yourself to improve your fitness and strength and meet new friends. The club meets at the Yamba Moby Dick Boat Ramp on Saturday at 7.30am and Hickey Island on Wednesday at 2.30pm for an hour of paddling. We have coaches and experienced paddlers willing to offer advice and support. Come and give it a try! You will be warmly welcomed. Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club not only survived Stage 1 of Isolation Fitness Madness but have just completed Stage 2 with 24 me mbers taking part. Teams were rearranged and new Team Captains were delegated, and the fitness challenges exercised members brains as well as their bodies. Similar to Stage 1, new team names had to be found. … Which quarantine bird are you and their reason for their choice. So we had the: Brahminy Kite *completely independent, can hover effortlessly and so provide a good surveillance of people sneaking across borders on illegal holidays, *are self-sufficient and able to catch fish and can also catch rats, (there are a few people around like that, they have all the toilet paper) *and like us they are beautiful, graceful and elegant. The Golden Eagle *Cos we are going to " Fly like an eagle“, *It's also the bird featured on the Mexican flag which, as we all know, is where Corona comes from!!! Team Albatross *Great isolation as they fly around the sea virtually not stop for years, *Maintain great social distancing with a wingspan of 3.5mm, *If humans were like the Albatross COVID-19 wouldn't spread as they are very solitary creatures. The Invincible Bitza Bird *Genetic Pool of the Lorikeet (toilet paper under control - down to five squares only at one time), Kookaburra (always laughing), Cockatoo (playing by the rules of anti-virus distancing), Seagull (just LOVVVVE our chips), Bower Bird (would love a bunker, but no room for extension), Magpie (always warbling with no one really listening - hinge - drive - power – up), Owl (no not much has changed - life as usual). The next challenge was for each team to submit 3 jokes. The Bitza Birds did well… *It may take a village to raise a child, but I swear it will take a vineyard to home school one. *Anyone else starting to get a tan from the light in their fridge. *The buttons on my jeans have started to social distancing from each other. The final team challenge of Stage 2 was to have a caption for the photo and the winners were: A'hhh the serenity, ‘Where the bloody hell are you?’, Big line up at ‘One Fine Cup’ and Unprecedented. Team captains made daily contact with their team either by text, email or phone ensuring exercises and challenges were completed and just to chat. DJ Bruce chose some fabulous ‘songs of the day’ to exercise to. President Ree when interviewed was really thrilled to see the input and commitment of each team to compete whilst keeping each other entertained and connected to our fab little club.🏋 .’ CCDBC will now move to Stage 3 of Isolation Madness with 25 members committing to The Push-Up challenge to start May 11. CCDBC Novel Ideas to support home isolation
As we are no longer keeping fit on the water Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club has come up with some novel ideas to keep members fit but also to keep the social interaction happening whilst ‘social distancing’. Teams are set regular challenges which members must complete and report back to their team captain. The first challenge was to come up with a suitable team name. The 5 names are Corona X Fits, The Corona Conquerors, COVID Warriors, The 4 C's - Clarence Coast COVID Commandos, Team I'm Still Feelin' it! Challenge 2 - members are completing a 9-day exercise program of 9 exercises which increase in repetition and sets. Examples are high knees, push-ups, planks, wall sits, tricep dips, lunges and squats. Challenge 3 – members had to send in their quirky COVID Fact. And the winners were: the ingenuity of utilising bra cups as face masks!!, nearly all TV Reporters reporting from home, have designer bookshelves, every Green Bin is overflowing and feeling safer at present walking down a dark alley with a wad of cash than a 36 pack of loo paper!! One member has challenged their dog to complete the daily exercises!! When we survive COVID 19, CCDBC will thrive. Local Dragon Boats paddle the magnificent South Arm
The Clarence Coast Dragon Boat Club joined forces with Grafton Dragon Boat Club to enjoy a fabulous Australia Day paddle on the mighty Clarence River at Brushgrove. Following an hour of paddling the South Arm, completing several tasks which challenged the brain as well as the paddling skills (thanks Tracey), both dragon boat crews headed to the Brushgrove Pub for a relaxing breakfast. As part of the social activities, paddlers Australiana slang, history and music knowledge were tested with ‘Winners are Grinners’ winning the quiz and ‘4 Sheilas and 2 Drongos’ showing their superiority winning the ‘Spicks and Specks’ Award. Fashion on the water was awarded to John, who had the Aussie flag flying from his yellow and green hat, add in an Aussie bow tie and a boxing kangaroo shirt. Jan also shared the fashion award with her flashing red white and blue lei. As 2020 has arrived, possibly there are a few new arrivals to the Clarence Valley, or a few locals may have taken the step into retirement! So now is the time to take the opportunity to make new friends, decrease those stress levels further and enjoy regular social activities and try dragon boat paddling. Don’t put it off, act now and help yourself to live long and live well – join us on Wednesday 3.30pm at Hickey Island and/or Saturdays 7.30am at the Yamba Boat ramp.
